Thank you for subscribing as a Pal of Defector for the past year! Your support makes our work possible. With your subscription up for renewal on September 16, 2024, we wanted to highlight both what we achieved last year and the cool stuff we plan to do this year:
- Site improvements: We launched a pair of oft-requested features: Readers can browse the site in dark mode, and subscribers can generate unlimited gift links for sharing Defector articles. We can also now run big, fancy header images which lend deeply reported blogs (e.g. here and here) the heft they deserve.
- More great blogs: According to our reader survey, Defector subscribers wanted more Politics and Arts & Culture blogs. On the former count, we started publishing a column from Tom Scocca; on the latter, many Defector staffers have tried their hands at Art Blogs. We also hired Rachelle Hampton to bolster both coverage areas! And last year, we set an internal goal of doing more on-site reporting. We sent Giri to Wimbledon and Roland Garros, Diana covered NPB from Tokyo and the Olympics from Paris, and Maitreyi trekked to equally-glamorous Indianapolis on the Caitlin Clark beat.
- Podcasts: Season 6 of Normal Gossip is in the books, and Season 7 is on the way! The Distraction remains as strong as ever, and we have a new show in the works 👀
- Crosswords: The Defector Crossword is live as a weekly, subscriber-only feature on the site. We are proud to pay puzzle constructors well and promptly for their work, as we do with all freelancers.
