Hello and welcome back to Five Things Running! This last week I didn’t run much, I just needed some rest after the last couple of weeks. But I did something crazy: I went swimming twice last week and I still hate it, even though I know that it is good for me. Honestly, what really annoys me right now is the weather. It’s great for running, just around 20 degrees but in the middle of August I want some heat and sun and all these summer vibes. So I’m a bit grumpy now that I have to be back at rather cold and rainy weather after running in the heat in Croatia. I even went swimming in the rain in my usual outdoor pool. That also didn’t improve the experience at all. The thing that annoyed me most last week was me not buying a pair of running shoes impulsively. For some reasons I wanted to see what the Merrell x Janji collab looked like and then wanted to see what the normal Merrell Agility Peak 5 looks like, which lead me to a running shop that sold the shoes for 49€, which is just a tad less than the 160€ it normally costs. After reading and watching some reviews I really wanted to buy the shoes, but for some reason thought about not needing new shoes right now, but still somehow wanting them. Long story short, when I was done with my thinking a day later, the deal was gone from the website. Aaargh. 49€ was such a steal! I’m such an idiot! Anyhow, I got some reading done while not running that much and here are five articles about running you should really read! Why I Run“My runs are one of the few parts of my day where my mind is quiet. Well, relatively quiet. My brain isn’t scurrying over email and social media. I’m not breaking up fights between my kids or shoveling food onto their plates as fast as they can eat it. Sometimes I’m working through a creative problem: a knot in a story or a comic strip idea that’s not quite gelling. But usually a run is a pleasant escape from my thoughts.” - this totally resonates with me, thanks to Grant Snider for sharing his thoughts. Physiological resilience: A key component of marathon and ultramarathon performanceWhy do you slow down towards the end of a long race like a marathon? This is an interesting discussion about increasing the resilience to carry on stronger in long races. Physiology Friday #231: Is Double Threshold Training the Fast-track to Fitness and Performance?Brady Holmer explains how double threshold training (“the Norwegian method”) works. Have you tried it? Would you try it? It sounds really promising, but also very time-consuming. A Training Plan To Run 100 MilesJust in case you watched the recent coverage of Western States, Hardrock or Leadville, or a looking forward to UTMB, and now start to think about running 100 miles yourself - here’s a training plan that makes it sound doable. Learning To RestThis is what I did this week. Just three runs. And more sleep. I can highly recommend it.
