Hello, and thanks for making it to another edition of The Cipher.

Today on Defector, we've got a double dose of Drew, with the Funbag and Why Your Team Sucks for the Dolphins. Just below, there's a triple dose of blogs!

Maybe It's Good to Be A Little Delusional
Ever since I entered my delusional state, where I chose to believe that the Phillies were intentionally losing some of their games against good teams in order to preserve their good moves for the playoffs, I have lived in a state of peace and joy. As I wrote last week, though, my delusion was very dependent on what happened during the homestand. "My delusion requires this team to win 5 of the next 6 in order for me to maintain it, and I am scared," I wrote.

They won four, which turned out to be good enough for me! I feel great. Should I? Probably not! But I do! That's the beauty of being a fan: Until the last game my team plays, everything is possible. It's one of my favorite things about baseball. There is no clock running out. There is no lack of time. You can always, always make a comeback. Unless, of course, you're the Chicago White Sox.

Hellfector Softball Is 4-0 After Win Over McNally Jackson
Monday's softball game had an ominous start: Not even a minute after stepping off the train in Chelsea, it began to pour. But after a roughly 20-minute rain delay and an inspection of the turf field, Hellfector was able to play a full seven innings against McNally Jackson. The result: a wire-to-wire 18-5 win. Despite the absence of everyday players Lauren "The Michigan Menace" Theisen (post-vacation errands) and Jasper "The Business Basher" Wang (other plans), Hellfector's squad came together to produce some clutch hitting from everyone in the lineup, plus solid fielding that included a stellar outfield catch by Hell Gate's Max Rivlin-Nadler. Then both teams went to a bar and had some beers afterward.

With the victory, Hellfector is now 4-0 on the season. (The first game between Defector and Hell Gate, a Defector win, doesn't count as a loss against the merged team because everyone won by having fun.) At the time of this writing, we have no more opponents scheduled this year, so barring a last-minute challenge by some other softball team with a permit, I am ready to declare this the greatest season in Hellfector history.
