It’s almost back-to-school time for the college students among us, and you know what that means: it’s icebreaker season! In honor of all the social awkwardness brewing in classrooms across the country, let’s play two truths and a lie.
- We are already mad about the next season of Survivor
- Kelsey’s dog Georgia finds great joy in the daily delivery of the mail
- We recorded the first episode of season seven last week!
This week, Kelsey introduces us to her (formerly?) terrible son on the Philadelphia Phillies, Alex reviews Anna Marie Tendler’s new memoir, and our buddy Brandy Jensen calls upon New Yorkers to remember that New York is not, in fact, the center of the universe. And a lil secret, of course.

Meet my favorite baseball player |
I wrote about one of my favorite baseball players: Alec Bohm. He is 6'5". His friends call him Raffy because he runs like a giraffe. Someone taught him the Curly Girl Method last year and now his hair is so beautiful; it's like a doll. He is roommates with the centerfielder. I highly recommend picking a player to love!

Things we are liking right now |
Alex:
- I watched the 1974 The Great Gatsby over the weekend and wow, the clothes were beautiful. Also: a young Sam Waterston??? I thought he came out of the womb with that gray hair!!
- I popped into a yarn shop and saw a sample of the Flower Power Pullover by Lindsay Degan and I completely fell in love. This will be my first fall knitting project!
- I’m traveling to Florence this week so I’ve been reading a bunch of books about the city and art history. The Feud that Sparked the Renaissance by Paul Robert Walker has been my favorite so far. It’s readable but really gets into what defined Brunelleschi and Ghiberti’s work culturally and aesthetically.
- I cannot stop listening to “Diet Pepsi” by Addison Rae. Holy shit. It makes me want butterfly clips and a thong sticking out of my low-rise jeans. No thoughts just falsetto sex kitten vibes. And that key change!!!!
Kelsey:
- I devoured Mary Gaitskill's book of short stories Because They Wanted To. They're gossipy and strange and mesmerizing.
- I watched the first five episodes of the new season of Emily in Paris on Netflix, and immediately forgot everything that happened in them. 10/10 viewing.
- Last week, I went to the beach and was reminded again how much I love the expensive swimsuit from Left on Friday I bought myself as a treat. It's flattering, secure enough to play beach volleyball, and comes in fun colors.

Anna Marie Tendler trusts you'll know who she's talking about |
I wrote about Anna Marie Tendler’s new memoir “Men Have Called Her Crazy.” I followed the news of her divorce from John Mulaney like a greedy little monster, and I was so curious to see what she would say in her memoir. What I found was a woman struggling with the public perception of her as a Famous Man’s Ex-Wife. I could see what she was trying to do, but the memoir wasn’t particularly successful at subverting that perception.

Can I say something bitchy? |
New York is probably the city with the highest concentration of people I love. So many of my dear friends live there, as I did once, and, for the most part, I love getting little updates about what they’re all doing. The one time of year this is not true is late August or early September—whenever the city begins to feel some relief from the oppressive heat of summer. My friends will post joyously about a briskness to the air. They will be taking long walks during the day. They will be wearing pants on their Instagram stories. Meanwhile, I continue to explore the outer bounds of how much sweat the human body can produce. It’s not fall where I live, and it won’t be for many weeks. I’m happy for you, but please keep that shit to yourself.
