Five Things Tech: Twitter, Silicon Saxony, EBS, Section 230, SearchIt's another Saturday full of Tech! Read on, my dear!Hello and welcome back to Five Things Tech! This week I’ll laugh about the huge financial failure X is after Elon Musk bought it. And then we’ll look at Silicon Saxony and what this could mean for the European semiconductor industry. The techie in me enjoyed the article about Elastic Block Storage (EBS) and I know that this might sound a bit geeky. Law geeks might get a kick out of the way Ethan Zuckermann tries to use Section 230 against Big Tech companies like Meta. As we probably all use the word “to google” when we mean “to find something online”, it’s a good idea to reflect a bit about search and the monopoly Google has built over the last two decades. Grab a coffee and then start reading! ☕️ Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover Is Now the Worst Buyout for Banks Since the Financial CrisisI signed up on Twitter right after it got started and I spent a lot of time there. It saddens me how it is going down the drain now under the ownership of Elon Musk. Musk seems to be as unhinged as Trump and neither users nor advertisers are interested in that type of community. You find me on Threads. Europe’s chips are on the table with new TSMC factory and ‘Silicon Saxony’I’m a bit torn on this. While I appreciate the sentiment that a Silicon Saxony could be a booming region, I miss investments in true innovation in semiconductors that could create a new German ecosystem. Instead, we lure Intel and TSMC with plenty of billions of € to build their fabs there. Also, this won’t mean for sure that Germany will get better access to chips. Still, it’s probably better to have this in Saxony than somewhere else in Europe. Continuous reinvention: A brief history of block storage at AWSWhen AWS got started, I was a big fan immediately - I loved the idea of the Elastic Compute Cloud (ec2) and started playing around with it. The next big invention was the Elastic Block Storage (EBS), which was pretty exciting back then. How Section 230 Is Being Used Against Tech Giants Like MetaI remember Ethan Zuckermann from the really early days of blogging. It seems he kept busy in the last years and now came up with an interesting idea on how to use Section 230 against the Big Tech companies. Competing in searchSo, let’s have a look at search and how Google got to build a monopoly. The big question is: what now? Who can or wants to challenge Google? That’s all for now! Thanks for reading!
