Deez Links Book Club Podcast Ep 2: Lucy Yu and I read “The Crane Wife”And discuss modern love, life choices, and the BEAUTY and also AGONY of ambiguity.Wowww what’s that, a second episode of the extremely fledgling sort-of-monthly Deez Links Book Club Podcast hittin the inbox for our paid subscribers? Indeed it is! For this month, my dear friend Lucy Yu, the owner of the best bookshop on earth AKA New York’s Yu & Me Books, hopped on the pod to discuss CJ Hauser’s 2022 memoir/essay collection, The Crane Wife. You may have read Hauser’s 2019 viral Paris Review essay of the same name; Lucy and I both loved that piece so much that we decided to give Hauser’s book a spin. Spoiler alert: I didn’t end up loving the book at all, whereas Lucy really did? We wound up having a solid little heart-to-heart about it, and it made me think of the book in a totally different light. Many of Hauser’s essays tackle love and relationships, so in discussing it, we got personal about our own frustrations with the whole dating-to-nuclear-family track, which Hauser questions at length in their writing. I came out of the conversation the way I always do after a chat with Lucy: smarter, calmer, and infinitely more thoughtful. Give it a listen, and let me know if she has that effect on you, too <3 ...
