Hey gang, and thanks for coming to The Cipher. You're almost done with the week!

Below, we have some big news. Also, if you're looking to participate in the next music club, perhaps you should listen to Charli XCX's Brat very, very soon.

Come Party With Defector In Philly!
Defector is getting old, and it's expanding beyond New York City! On Wednesday, Sept. 11, we'll be celebrating our fourth birthday with a little get-together at a Philadelphia venue called The Coop. There will be some readings, a bar, and good times. The Philly gang will be there, and I'm trying to get as much of the NYC crew as possible to head down, too.

You should join! There's no cover or anything, but it would help if you RSVPed at this link.

Now I will share my favorite Philly cheesesteak: Rex Pizza & Beer. I went there twice over a weekend last month.

U.S. Open Matches, Ranked
I've watched a shitload of the U.S. Open—often on my TV, computer, and phone at the same time. There's not really a container for this on Defector proper, so here is a ranking of the best 10 matches that I've watched, as of 8/29, 11:21 a.m. PT, with one sentence worth of notes each:

  1. Musetti-Kecmanovic R2: Five-set banger, great crowd, Musetti is the coolest guy in the world maybe, Italy definitely.
  2. Paolini-Andreescu R1: Definitive proof that possessing an interior canine is the most important skill in tennis.
  3. Evans-Khachanov R1: Biggest choke/best comeback I've seen at a slam this year, Evans has such a good record against villains.
  4. Osaka-Ostapenko R1: As good as I've seen Naomi hit a tennis ball all year.
  5. Zheng-Anisimova R1: This should have been a third-rounder, Anisimova is super cool, too bad she had to play the gold medalist.
  6. Lehecka-Krueger R2: Legs >>>>>>
  7. Nakashima-Rune R1: "No offense to my opponent, but" Oh my god shut up!!!!!! You got your ass kicked.
  8. Rublev-Rinderknech R2: Heat management masterclass, this match was played inside the sun and Rublev got stronger as it went on.
  9. Alcaraz-Tu R1: Feistier opponent than Carlos was expecting.
  10. Maroszan-Medjedovic R1: Another cool five-setter, Maroszan always impresses me and I can never figure out why.
