Five Things Tech: Germany, China, China, Glass, Data CentersIt's another Saturday full of Tech! Read on, my dear!Hello and welcome back to Five Things Tech! This week we look at the German state elections coming up this Sunday, then we will look at China, twice. First we learn about more and more people from the tech industry leaving China due to the perceived lack of development opportunities, then we ger a glimpse of the discussion around curbing China’s global influence by forming coalitions that enforce tariffs. Then we can turn our attention to glass and 3d printing, which is just amazing stuff. And last, but not least, we can learn about the future of data centers, which is really more exciting than it sounds. Data centers will literally be everywhere. That’s it for this Saturday! Grab a coffee and then start reading! ☕️ Germany’s tech scene gets political ahead of state electionsIt’s interesting to note that German state elections get international coverage, but I don’t think the tech scene is political enough. There are two parties gaining traction that want the West to stop supporting Ukraine - one is the fascist AfD, the other is a weird leftist populist party. It is insane that anyone could even remotely consider voting for these idiots. And for the tech industry that needs to attract lots of smart people from around the world, these lunatics with their ideas of deportation for all people without a clear German lineage don’t exactly make those states look more attractive. Can China Tech Find a Home in Silicon Valley?“Chinese tech professionals are moving to Silicon Valley for opportunities they don’t believe are available in China anymore. They’re part of a wave of Chinese companies “going global,” as a growing number of businesses look outside their home country for growth.” - let’s see how this will play out in the long run, I assume that the Chinese government cannot let this brain drain happy for too long. Stopping the Next China Shock: A Collective Strategy for Countering BeijingEssentially the big question boils down to the challenge of forging a coalition of countries to create tariffs on tech from China. This will lead to a huge reorganization of global trade, will change manufacturing and possibly create at least a trade war with China. How Do You 3D Print Glass? This is not something I would try at home any time soon, but I’m amazed on how quickly the concept of 3d printing evolved from a weird idea into something practically that allows for new shapes and new usecases for lots of materials, including glass. The future of data centers — on land, at sea, and in spaceIn the near future, data centers will be everywhere. I still remember my ISP using IKEA racks to house the servers they hosted. Amazing how this industry developed in the last 30 years. That’s all for now! Thanks for reading!
