Five Things: Ice, Consulting, Waste, Gardens, CrayonsHere's all you need to read on this Sunday Morning.Hello and Good Morning! It’s the first day of September and I spent parts of my Saturday supporting my wife hunting down the best and therefore only acceptable canned pumpkin purée. This stuff from Libby’s is available in every grocery store in the US, but somehow the Germans do pumpkins differently than the Americans, which is my only explanation for why we don’t have these cans in the canned food aisle everywhere. Usually, we can get this pumpkin purée only at those “US Shops” that sell weird overpriced candy and high-fructose variations of food we could get elsewhere for half the price. But that store closed a month ago. And of course we couldn’t find the only acceptable type of pumpkin either, that we could use to make the purée ourselves. I know, it’s a tragic story. We’re heading into fall, it’s way too hot and we don’t have any pumpkin purée. But you haven’t tasted the pumpkin bread our 12 year old daughter, affectionately known as K3, baked last week. It was so amazing. I could eat that all fall and that’s why I want fall to start real soon now. Well, after we located some cans of that pumplin purée. Other than that, I will stay away from the news this Sunday as I don’t want to read about how two German states vote for fascists and populists. Enjoy these Five Things! The Summer Is So Hot, Workers Are Wearing High-Tech Ice PacksWe had another summer with record heat. For people who have to work outside, it is not always possible to use the early morning hours or find shade during the day. To make the work a bit more bearable, new high-tech cooling systems get invented. While I applaud these efforts, I’d be happier if we’d do more about the reason why workers now need high-tech cooling systems for workers. The Contingency ContingentI remember talking to people who got these kind of consulting jobs right after university. They kind of knew that they weren’t really doing anything, but the pay sure did help convincing them that this was a real job at the time. Can Plastic Waste Be Transformed Into Food for Humans? So bacteria are reading plastic waste and we can then safely turn these bacteria into food, without having doses of microplastics in our bodies afterwards. This is so crazy, it is hard to wrap your head around it. How To Get The Most Out Of Urban GardensOne way to cool down our cities is planting more trees and creating more urban gardens. There is so potential for this is in every city - there are plenty of parking lots and roofs that would not only make the city more pleasant to look at, but also lead to real benefits for us humans and for nature as well, onviously. How Crayola Makes Crayons for Back-to-School SeasonSchool just got started and we bought plenty of new supplies for our kids, just no crayons. Here you can learn what the manufactoring process looks like. That’s it. Have a great Sunday!
