Five Things Running: Issue #77UTMB Week is over. This was spectacular! And Adventslauf is coming up!Heya and welcome back to Five Things Running! My last week included some recovery time after my first Ultra, so I didn’t run until Thursday morning. I actually stuck to the recommendations of my Oura ring and my Coros pace 2, that told me to take it slow for a while. I still had to walk the dog and that was a rather painful exercise on Monday, but at the same time some movement felt good. My first run on Thursday felt amazing and I did manage to get 40km in during the remainder of the week. I also managed to watch some UMTB coverage and listened to lots of trailgating discussions over at Freetrail. What a fun UMTB week full of surprises and extraordinary achievements this was! Katie Schide broke the course record, which is just amazing! And Vincent Bouillard won the 100 miles on the men’s side, which is just a fantastic story. Vincent started as an intern at Hoka and works there as a Senior Manager responsible for the shoes he was racing in. What a great sport, where something like this can be possible! Talking about possibilities: it is now possible to register for the one and only Adventslauf in Ratzeburg! This is by far my favorite race! It’s 26 km around Lake Ratzeburg. I went to school in Ratzeburg and from my school I could see the lake. I spent lots of time on the lake on excursions with my parents on weekends after visiting my grandparents. Lake Ratzeburg is of course famous for rowing and for having been the home base of the German Gold Eight in the 50s and 60s - the famous rowing coach Karl Adam was a teacher at my school a couple decades before I went there. And I learned windsurfing on that lake, which is probably my contrarian streak again: I never ever sat in a rowing boat, only to join a rowing club later on to play basketball there in a team... Also, and this is where it gets emotional for me: the Eastern shore of the lake was East Germany territory and essentially our world ended there. My biology teacher initiated the run right after the reunification of Germany was happening and for a long time was its race director. Last time I ran this race was two years ago, so I’m very much looking forward to December 1st! So, here are five interesting articles about running that I put together for you. Enjoy! Don’t try to win at your hobby (running)Simon | Trail Running Diaries asks the big question: why do we run? And what does that mean for us as runners? I run because it makes me feel so much better, both mentally and physically. HOW TO PREPARE FOR UTMBSo you were glued to the livestream from Chamonix the last few days and now you’re thinking about running 170 km around the Mont Blanc yourself? Luckily, Daniel Rowland put together a nice little primer for you so you can read up on what you need to do next. Hint: it includes some running. The Imaginary AudienceMy business partner and I just had this discussion about running and posting about it. He just runs and doesn’t need to tell the world about it. I run and I post on Strava (and sometimes also on Threads and Insta and Facebook). Why do we do this? How is the imaginary audience influencing our running? Verity Wright writes about “a delicate balance between authenticity and discretion”. How David Roche Nearly Ran His Dick Off And Maybe Changed Ultrarunning In The ProcessDavid Roche won the Leadville 100 two weeks ago and everybody was amazed about his very scientific approach that led him to running the race almost exactly how he laid it out in his spreadsheet before the race. But not everything went according to plan. How Running Went High TechRunning is simple. You just need shoes, shorts and a t-shirt. That’s what it was like before we needed a proper wearable and other tech stuff. And you know what? I like gathering all the data that I can gather right now to get a better understanding of my health and fitness.
