Hello again! So, yesterday I published this piece… …and down at #9 I threw in a YouTube video of a chap being emotionally overcome after trying on the ‘EnChroma’ colour-correcting glasses, which initially claimed to correct colour-blindness. Thanks to Mathieu D. in the comments, I learned that I should have done more reading into this, because this claim has been convincingly debunked in a number of studies (you can find links to them on EnChroma’s Wikipedia page). I feel pretty sure the reaction of the gentleman in the video is genuine. To my eye it looks far too real for that, with none of the artifice of Stuff Designed To Go Viral. But what he’s probably experiencing is the colours he could already see to some extent becoming much sharper and more distinct. It seems that’s something that the EnChroma glasses can do. But they can’t “fix” colour-blindness outright. So I’ve removed the video from the piece & left a correction in its place, in case it’s misleading anyone on this point. One thing about writing a newsletter as a student of what you write about is you sometimes get stuff wrong! Thankfully I have readers who know better, and are kind enough to steer me in the right direction - and then it becomes my job to correct myself publicly, just like this. I promise you I’ll keep doing that whenever it’s needed. Thanks for reading, - M |
