Welcome to The Logoff: Hi readers! Today, we are logging off: President Donald Trump is in the UK, being feted at a state visit (his second). Former CDC director Susan Monarez is on Capitol Hill testifying about her firing by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (for more on that, you can subscribe to Vox’s daily morning newsletter, Today, Explained). And the US is continuing to strike alleged drug-smuggling boats from Venezuela, despite lacking a legal basis for the strikes (we’ve written about it previously). Nothing, however, is so new or so urgent you need to know about it right now. 

Today’s Logoff is inspired by a question that briefly consumed the Vox Slack this afternoon: What’s the best variety of apple? The answer, clearly, is the Honeycrisp — and as it turns out, my colleague Alex Abad-Santos wrote about it way back in 2016. His story is a great look at what goes into creating new varieties of apples, as well as the bright future awaiting enthusiasts like yours truly — scientists are hard at work trying to create even sweeter, even crisper apples (such as Washington state’s own Cosmic Crisp). If there are any other apple varieties out there I need to try, I’d love to hear about them — other than that, have a great evening and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!
