Thank you to everyone who subscribes to Deez Links and especially at the P.O.D.A. (Patron of Deez Arts) tier such as Huge Ma! Thank you Huge! You all know I’m a Sally Rooney ride-or-die, but her usual single obligatory piece of Guardian press for her upcoming novel, Intermezzo (which will be our October read for the Deez Links book club with Kyle Chayka!) made me lol a lot because there is just something oddly comforting about fabulous writerly talent (“the book world’s Taylor Swift” here is amazing) giving some…. amazingly generic? quotes such as:
Go girl, give us nothing! (Laudatory) Fashion Week has always been a weathervane for power shifts in media: First came the bloggers, and then the influencers, and now the Substackers, per Rachel Tashjian’s report in WaPo. Quite a dizzying line: “Several newsletter writers said they have earned in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year from affiliate revenue and paid subscriptions.” If you want to save yourself some dozens of hours of trying to figure out the drama within Fashion Substack, this is the piece to read because Rachel subtly gestures at all the dividing faultlines. Starting with that kicker… It’s been a while since Modern Love pulled a sneaky on my cold dead heart but this one did it!! Bro I told ya mag beef was back……(Yeah it’s 11,000 words but it didn’t feel like it!) Finally, a personal plug: I swear I was just riffing in July when I wondered who’d get the first big Chappell Roan cover; by now you know that the great Brittany Spanos did it for Rolling Stone last week (though as Deez foretold, Interview *did* get on it early for a feature in August…). But what I couldn’t have predicted was getting called up by THE FACE magazine later that month and being sent out to LA at the end of July to do their Chappell cover story for the Brit masses?? I honestly thought that initial email from my editor at The Face was just a really genius phishing attempt lol. Anyway, that profile is out this week, and I hope you enjoy it! Don’t miss Nate Flagg’s exhibition at Post Times, featuring intricate geometric drawings that are structured by letters and words from a language invented by the artist. Artforum named it a MUST SEE show. Learn more about the work and language at the catalogue release party with the artist on September 26th, 6-8pm at 29 Henry Street.
