Welcome to The Logoff: Hi readers, today we’re logging off. The government is still shut down and while President Donald Trump is making ominous rumblings about denying furloughed workers back pay, nothing substantial has materialized yet. We’ll cover that if it does, but until then, have a great evening! 

Today in gloriously logged-off news: It’s Nobel week — but it took one new laureate, Fred Ramsdell, a while to find out that he had won. 

Ramsdell, one of the three scientists jointly awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine on Monday, was on a three-week hiking trip, his phone on airplane mode, and missed the early-morning call from the Nobel Assembly. He only found out later in the day after his wife began to receive congratulatory texts. 

In addition to being admirably offline, there’s some very good scientific news in the story: Ramsdell’s research on the immune system, along with Mary E. Brunkow and Shimon Sakaguchi, could have major implications for understanding and treating cancer and autoimmune diseases.
