Self-Host Weekly (10 October 2025)

Weekly Highlights

Every so often I'm reminded just how much the self-hosted community relies on the very platforms we're trying to escape (Discord, Cloudflare, etc.). This week, GitHub stole the spotlight with their announcement that feature work will be paused (well, kind of) as the company migrates their infrastructure to Azure. (If you haven't already guessed, it's driven by AI-induced resource constraints.)

And while I recognize the difficulty self-hosting infrastructure and development pipelines might pose for some projects, I'm still hopeful events like this will at least prompt some to consider a transition to non-profits like Codeberg instead. (Either way, I'm not judging.)

There was a flurry of other interesting activity and buzz this week that more than one of you will be impacted by:

• selfh.st/apps received a major redesign and some new functionality (sidebar, new filters, updated light theme, and more)
• The developer of Tiny Tiny RSS abruptly announced he's shuttering the project and sending it to the gas chambers. But don't worry – contributors have already created a new home for a community-maintained fork of the project.
• The Overseerr and Jellyseerr teams went straight from dating to married as they announced the two are merging into a single project named Seerr (such a tragedeigh)
• Revolt Chat misread users' feedback towards Portainer's purple rebranding and went all-in on the color as the project was renamed to Stoat after receiving a cease-and-desist over the use of the word 'Revolt'
• The Actual Budget team shared their contributor rewards program has been a success and that they'll be expanding it in the coming months
• A new container update platform named Tugtainer made me regrettably aware of what 'tug' means in other parts of the world
• Python missed its opportunity to make a π-thon joke with the release of v3.14 this week

Meet PigeonPod, a self-hosted platform for converting YouTube content into podcasts. With PigeonPod, users can easily subscribe to channels and playlists to automatically have their content downloaded and published to a generated podcast feed as soon as it appears. Features include automatic syncing, content filtering, episode management, audio quality controls, ad removal, and a responsive UI.

PigeonPod can be easily deployed via Docker and doesn't require any additional dependencies to run.
