Weekly Highlights

Happy Friday! It was yet another busy week, and one filled with reminders of why so many of us self-host – an AWS outage turned smart beds into dumb beds, Pinterest added the ability to disable AI-generated content suggestions, Microsoft released a new Clippy-like assistant for Copilot named Mico, and this guy struggled to automate things in the bedroom so he could focus on Call of Duty (NSFW).

In actual self-hosted news, the ongoing MinIO debacle continued as users discovered the project will no longer provide pre-built containers for the community given a recent shift to source-only availability. Cue another wave of users making the jump to other platforms.

Other notable activity from the week:

• Jellyfin received a significant update that introduces backups and a major database conversion/cleanup (read the upgrade notes before updating!)
• FUTO (popularly associated with Immich and Louis Rossman) received some backlash for subverting third-party donor guidelines in the conducting of its grant program
• I discovered IronCalc, a slick browser-based spreadsheet platform that actually promises to give Google Drive a run for its money (although still in early release)
• A Home Assistant community developer received a frustrating amount of flack for facilitating a new dashboard beta on one closed platform (Discord) instead of another (GitHub)
• The folks over at F-Droid had (and are still having) a lengthy debate on adding content warnings to religious apps

Meet Velld, a self-hosted database backup platform. With Velld, users can easily schedule and manage database backups for various platforms (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis) directly from a modern web interface. Other features include S3-compatible storage integration, a built-in comparison/diff viewer, restoration functionality, and e-mail notifications for railed backups.

Velld can be easily deployed via Docker and requires two separate containers for API and web functionality.
