Democrats romped in both high-profile and low-profile elections Tuesday, in what clearly seemed like a national trend. The word “romp” is something of a cliche in election writing, but it’s an accurate way to describe what happened last night: Democrats romped to victory in governors races in New Jersey and Virginia, and a measure to redraw congressional districts in their favor passed easily in California. In New York, 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won a historic victory as the city’s mayor. Vox’s Andrew Prokop explains what the results might mean — or don’t — for future elections. For the Today, Explained newsletter, Cameron Peters spoke with Astead Herndon about Mamdani’s win and its significance outside New York. And Eric Levitz explains what Mamdani’s dream economy actually looks like. We’ll have more coverage coming throughout the day on Vox. This kind of work is made possible by our Vox Members.
