On occasion, you just need to go back to an old favorite. I do this when life is a bit too busy for me to think about making any more decisions than I have to. I've got a collection saved on my phone of my repeats where I can just queue one up without thinking. Sometimes I skip right to my favorite part, which is usually when the character is grinding to gain skills—that always gives me a bit of motivation to keep going through the relentlessness of my own life, until I can make it to the other side.

The best of the best list

What is it that makes a novel stand the test of time? Personally, I think it has to say something about the human condition in a way that no one has before and no one has since. The science fiction and fantasy books that have ranked among our best of the century so far—Cloud Atlas, Never Let Me Go, We Are Legion, to name a few—all hit this criteria.

With the arrival of chillier weather, I know y'all are queuing up that cozy fantasy right now. Since there's a lot to choose from, we created a nice starter pack for you. If you've never listened to a cozy fantasy before, I'd recommend starting with Travis Baldree's Legends & Lattes, the novel that heralded the explosion of the genre in 2022. But there are plenty of options for whatever you're into, be it friendly dragons, tea, books, small-town inns, or all of the above.
