I recently started seeing a new counselor via a work benefit I’d been underutilizing, and continued seeing him despite the fact that his youth felt incompatible with my tangle of issues. I carried on, at first because the benefit was undeniably great—and then because his advice really stuck. Recently, I discovered he was an up-and-coming country singer with talent and a following!
A great gift should be like this, don’t you think? You’re primed to like it because it’s basically being handed to you, though you may secretly harbor a few reservations. Gradually, its magic—usefulness, beauty, resonance, what have you—unfurls. If you’re stuck on what to give, we asked some of our favorite creators to play Santa for us. Plus, this year of incredible nonfiction is not over yet! Let’s dig in while the getting (and giving)’s good. Happy holidays, y’all. ❤️

Channeling my inner Scrooge for a moment—my one “bah humbug” about Best of the Year is that the year just keeps going even after the list is done. There have been some excellent nonfiction releases that dropped right around or after launch, and they’re so good I had to share them with you. From Patti Smith and Yo-Yo Ma to multicast American history and Goodreads Choice winner How to Kill a Witch, the year ain’t over till it’s over.

Scott Galloway is a true force—whether you’re looking for money tips, a no-filter podcast, or an insightful newsletter, you’ll find Scott, who has the energy and opinions of 10 average men. No wonder we’re sitting up at attention for his latest bestseller, Notes on Being a Man, which addresses the loneliness and performance crises befalling so many boys and men today. Please don’t miss this fascinating conversation he had with my colleague Katie O’Connor, a mom to four young boys who is deeply invested in Scott’s concerns around smartphones and social media, careers, relationships, and so much more.

As Katie and I discussed on This Is Audible, an audiobook is a clutch gift. Forget shipping delays and paper cuts, and let your present do the talking (literally). You can always gift a membership or crowd-pleasing rec from the Audible Gift Center, but if you want to level up, we polled some of our favorite authors for their #1 gifts. From Matt Dinniman and Kal Penn to Elizabeth Gilbert and Kennedy Ryan, they understood the assignment. (I especially loved Ed Helms coming in with A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever 💔.) 10/10, no notes—except of the “thank you” variety.

Resolutions, shmesolutions. My favorite year-end tradition is when our editors take stock of the biggest and buzziest releases on the horizon. While my #1 pick of the year is a debut novel about a tradwife influencer who wakes up in the 1800s (!), I found tons of exhilarating nonfiction to set my true-story-loving heart aflame—as did my fellow editors in every other genre.
