If you’re still casting about for New Year’s resolutions for 2026, I recommend this story from my colleague Adam Clark Estes: What podcasts do to our brains (it’s a gift link). Last year, Adam took a month off from podcasts and gained a new appreciation for the many ways silence is good for us.
Adam’s experience doesn’t mean you should quit podcasts outright — for example, my colleagues create lots of great podcasts that you should absolutely listen to. But if you, like me, almost constantly have something (audiobooks, podcasts, or music) playing in the background, it’s a good reminder to take breaks and enjoy the sound of your own thoughts and the world around you once in a while. That’s something I’m going to try to be mindful of in 2026, and maybe it interests you, too. Have a great evening!
