As a subscriber to Defector's Blogs of the Week newsletter, we wanted to share with you a story that we published today: It's a deep dive into a lawsuit filed this week in San Diego court against the NWSL's San Diego Wave. The lawsuit asserts 15 claims, including racial discrimination against three former employees and retaliation against an ex-employee after she said she was sexually assaulted by a then-Wave employee.

We are proud to do this work, and support from subscribers like you makes it possible. You can read the story below. As a warning, the story does have a few passages that discuss sexual assault.

When they joined the NWSL, San Diego Wave FC portrayed themselves as more than just a soccer club. As president Jill Ellis put it at a press event, the Wave would stand as "not simply as a football club, but as a platform for those who dare to dream."

The lawsuit filed by five former employees, all women, portrays something else. It claims a litany of issues at the NWSL club, including disability discrimination, racial discrimination, sexual harassment, failure to investigate and prevent discrimination and harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and retaliating for engaging in protected activity.
