A Rupture in Time

By Sarah Aziza

This week marked the one-year anniversary of Israel’s brutal assault on Gaza.

On our site, Sarah Aziza explains how the task of keeping time can feel almost meaningless in the face of such violence—though her Palestinian family still has a tally of days since their last displacement, the hours between bombs. “Genocide, so wild and ruthless it mutilates even the clock,” she writes. Millions of lives have been interrupted or cut cruelly short. This stands in stark contrast to the delusional fables liberal Zionists have long told themselves; as David Klion points out, their belief that Israel could wage a “just, targeted, legitimate war” has proven dangerously wrong.

Elsewhere, Adewale Maja-Pearce outlines Nigeria’s struggle for democracy in an excerpt from his new book, while Corey Atad reports from a film festival in a city whose public goods are being sold off by a corrupt mayor.

And speaking of those: Charlie Dulik describes how the New York Post bolstered the career of Eric Adams and the reactionary politicians who came before him. (Dulik’s story was published in collaboration with Hell Gate, a worker-owned outlet covering New York City politics and culture. You can—and should—subscribe to their newsletters here.)
