Now in Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Every October, I devote much of this newsletter to the beloved sibling of sci-fi and fantasy: horror. It’s spooky season, after all, and horror is having quite a moment in the spotlight in recent years. Sure, the darkening days, chilly nights, and whistling winds of early autumn feel especially fitting for probing the creepier corners of fiction, but I’m an advocate for horror as year-round listening. There are just too many smart, fun, pulse-pounding stories out there to sequester our scary listening to a mere 31 days of the year. And what, you may wonder, should you queue up for the remaining 334? It just so happens I have some suggestions...

The top 100 horror listens of all time

This list encompasses the full spectrum of what horror can be—campfire-worthy tales, stomach-churning gore, and incisive social commentary. The classics are accounted for, but it also spotlights more recent titles than you might find on our other Audible Essentials lists, because that’s the nature of the genre—it is as perennial as it is ever-evolving, conjuring whatever frights most haunt our collective consciousness. Each title does have one thing in common: It makes for devilishly good listening. So shut the lights and press play—if you dare.

This has been an unusually scary good year for horror. Keep up with the books that everyone is talking about this spooky season.

Billed as Parks and Rec meets Federation of Planets (a spot-on description), Constituent Service is delightfully bite-sized workplace satire—and anyone who has ever worked in municipal services or customer service will get a special little joy out of listening. I was thrilled to see Amber Benson return to narrate John Scalzi’s work: Like his frequent narrator Wil Wheaton, she has nerd cred combined with a certain effortless cool that permeates her performance and strikes the perfect note for Scalzi’s irreverent humor.

When the cult-favorite sci-fi western Wynonna Earp was canceled three years ago, fans were devastated. But the beloved TV series has roared back to life in 2024, first with a 90-minute streaming revival and now with this ferociously entertaining Audible Original. The TV cast that viewers know and love returns for this genre-blending, demon-hunting romp with a yee-haw flair.
