Wait, are we all just doing scams now?

Normal Gossip <yourpals-donotreply@defector.com>

October 17, 2:12 pm

It’s the season of scandal! There's the steel chestnut controversy at the World Conker Championships, treachery in the fanfiction community in last week's episode and this week’s (poorly) rigged bingo game, there’s no shortage of low-stakes bad behavior this October. We hope you’ve been enjoying all this as much as we enjoyed coming up with the name meGaia for our fake MLM. (A lot!)

This week Kelsey shares her love of
The Great British Bake-Off, Alex has some thoughts on art and authorship, and we have a visit from Defector Business Guy Jasper Wang on the subject of listing enemies. We’ve got a thirsty lil' secret for ya, too.

Kelsey tries to bake (again!)
Have you ever watched The Great British Bake-Off and wondered what it would be like if a normal person tried to do these bakes? Have you ever wanted the same recipes but with an aura of panic and terror? Well do I have a treat for you! My colleague Chris Thompson and I returned to the Baking Tent—that only exists in our separate kitchens—for the third year in a row. Despite feeling that we have improved a lot, the results are mixed!

Things we are liking right now
Alex:
  • These people are having a superior Love is Blind viewing experience.
  • If you're in New York, check out Nowon in Bushwick. We went recently and it was a masterpiece.
  • I read Lauren Sherman and Chantal Fernandez's new book Selling Sexy: Victoria’s Secret and the Unraveling of an American Icon and I learned so much. Great context ahead of the return of the VS fashion show!
  • The Deborah Pagani Large DP Pin. I know, I KNOW, the price. I found one on a secondhand site for a great discount, so I recommend keeping an eye out there. It really is better than the rinky dink hair pins you can get at Target, especially if you have thick hair that usually breaks these things.
Kelsey:
Who owns an idea?
I visited the Sol LeWitt retrospective at Mass MoCA a few weeks ago, and it gave me a lot to think about regarding credit, creative genius, and authorship.

Can I say something bitchy?
This week's NG episode starts with Danielle Henderson and Kelsey talking about keeping a list of enemies. I do not keep a personal enemies list but I'd like to make a related recommendation (that I've already made to Kelsey, that she's quoted in The Atlantic about): Keep a list of your friends' enemies.

Loving the people your friends love, is love. It's an important form of love. But hating on the people they hate on is also a form of love. It can be just as important, and a lot of the time it's actually easier. It can be difficult to love the people your friends love. It's a high bar to love someone.
But hating on people? Easy, say no more. I'm a lifelong hater, I was born to do that. Point me in their direction, drop their Instagram in the group chat, I’m immediately on board.

The list in my Notes app is called "Second-Hand Enemies of Mine." The entries on the list vary wildly in their levels of seriousness. Like, one is an executive of a hospital system who abuses their power to cater to local politicians. And one is, "spilled my friend's drink ten years ago and didn’t offer to buy another one." They're both enemies of mine, but we need to recognize the different levels here. One of those, I'd testify in a federal investigation to help get them fired. The other one… I'll just go to a different hospital. (I’m kidding. But for real, the drink spiller is dead to me.)

The first question people always ask about my Note is, are my wife’s enemies listed? No. Of course I’ve adopted her enemies as my enemies, but those people are committed to memory. Do not write down your spouse’s enemies, that would be terrible OPSEC for your household. Do not leave a paper trail that might make life difficult for you and yours. But if people found out you hypothetically hold an intractable grudge against a friend-of-a-friend because they accidentally poisoned a friend’s dog (the hypothetical dog ended up fine), is that the worst thing in the world?

I'm an avid Simmer (like play the Sims) and I've chosen to stop recently because every time I play, I create these really hot sims and just get way too horny oops
