The 7: When the election results will become clear; final campaign stops; dealing with stress; and more

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, Nov. 5, and it’s going to be a historic news day. Let’s get straight into a special, all-election edition of The 7.

Are you ready? After two years of campaigning, a pair of assassination attempts and a last-minute candidate change, voters will finally decide who will be the next U.S. president.
When will we know the results? It could take days. Polls remain tight, and close races take longer to count — here are four ways it could play out. Follow the latest news here.

What happened? Both appeared in Pennsylvania — one of seven key swing states. Harris held a star-studded event, while Trump seemed unable to control his worst impulses.
What else to know: Officials are bracing for “little fires everywhere” if Trump loses. And a polling surprise from Iowa stunned election watchers — here’s what it could mean.

Where? Voters in Missouri and Florida could overturn two of the nation’s strictest abortion bans, and Nebraskans are voting on dueling measures. See the full slate here.
Zooming out: Nearly two dozen states have restricted abortion since the fall of Roe v. Wade in 2022. That has galvanized women voters, and Harris hopes that will help her chances.

What that means: The controlling party, different in in each chamber, could lose power.
In the Senate: Democrats will almost certainly lose West Virginia, and their 51-49 edge. Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Jon Tester (Montana) are fighting to win reelection in red states.
In the House: Republicans hold a 220-212 edge, with three vacancies. Only 22 races are considered “toss ups” — Democrats need to win a handful to take control.

Why? This election will ripple far beyond U.S. borders. The candidates have vastly different stances on climate, immigration, foreign conflicts and more.
One key issue: Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon have hung over the Harris campaign. Both Palestinians and Israelis see little hope, however the election goes.

How it will work: The Associated Press provides the majority of the race calls The Post will make. But we’ll consult other sources before reporting calls in some key races.
