Heya and welcome back to Five Things Running! I had a great week running, I hope you did, too! I managed to get in more than 65km and I enjoyed the wonderful fall season. I actually do like running in the rain. Just one morning I forgot that the warm water in our house was turned off and getting back home after running in the cold of the morning to then jump under a cold shower was a little too wimhof-ish for me. But I was really warm afterwards. Anyhow, here’s my Sunday run, which I managed to squeeze into taking two of my daughters to two different birthday parties. Also, now I know that eating pancakes, sausages, scrambled eggs, bacon and baked beans before going on a run is not the greatest idea. But it was so much fun to whip everything up together with my 12-year old daughter. During the run I felt like my body was using more energy for digesting than for running. With that out of the way, let’s dig into five really interesting articles about running! (and don’t forget to go paid, I need more running outfits, winter is coming.) Nike and Adidas are losing their lead in running shoesWhen I grew up in the 70s and 80s in Germany, there were two choices for any sports shoes: Adidas or Puma. You were either in camp or the other. Then Nike arrived on the scene, then Reebok and many more. Now we have so many challenger brands in running that it is hard to keep track. And I haven’t run in Adidas in a long time and I find other brands much more exciting as they better understand how running culture evolves. ✳️ Running Media’s Environmental Blind SpotHave you ever heard of PFAS? Me neither. Apparently it is a really toxic substance and one of those forever chemicals that aren’t really that fantastic for the environment and us humans. So it has been banned in the EU and it will be banned in some US states including California, from 2025 onwards. But nobody talks about this in running media. That’s peculiar, I think. Also, this is an area where the challenger brands clearly have an advantage and I’m still annoyed that I was sitting on a committee giving out grants to local startups and couldn’t convince the other people in the group that a cradle-to-cradle running shoe would be a good thing, even if lots of competition is there. A little bit faster than comfortableWhat’s your race pace? How can you find it? Can you just go with the flow? Is it your watch that tells you how fast you should run? Losing My Running MojoWe have all experienced this. Somehow, sometimes we just don’t feel like running. And then, suddenly, it’s been a week or two without running and you realize that it is better when you’re running. It is so okay to lose your running mojo every once in a while, we’re runners, not machines. More is Less“In the world of running, “more” can be a dangerous thing to chase. Sure, there are times when the pursuit is good. More miles can help to make us fitter and stronger. More intensity can help to hone our speed. But, as many runners are aware, too much of these things can backfire with a vengeance. The trend is not always positive. I can’t help but think that life is the same. Surely more has its limits. It can’t possibly be an infinite trajectory void of negative repercussions. At some point, more becomes less.” - I love it when Zach Miller digs into his thoughts about life.
