Just the other day I stumbled across a reel on Insta, which I had to share with my family. My son immediately replied “I’m sorry you had to use this. But also it looked kind of cool.” - the reel I shared was an old tv commercial from 1983 for the Commodore C64, the first real mass market personal computer. Before I finally had one, I spent most afternoons after school in the local department store at the Commodore C64 they had on display. Until the sales staff chased us away, we could type some BASIC commands into it, make it do fun things with peeks and pokes and generally annoy all the adults around. I was eleven years old and I was hooked on tech. It took me probably a year of constant begging and promising something outrageous like being a good son until my dad finally caved and bought me a C64 together with a trusty Datasette. It took me another year until I finally got a 1541 Floppy Disc Drive. It took me just a few months to wreck by soldering some parallel cable onto its tiny board to increase the file transfer speeds I needed for copying floppies. Those were the days… Some 40 years later I still find tech fascinating and inspiring. I started my career 25 years ago as a CTO after dabbling with Linux in the late 90s and building networks in student dorms while I was still doing my studies in political science and history.
