They were born in Nottingham in September 2003 and received their secondary education through the online school King's InterHigh. Their interest in acting began at the age of four, when they joined the Loughborough branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts, where they trained for seven years. They later joined the Television Workshop and began auditioning for professional roles.
From 2016 to 2019, they played Lyanna Mormont in the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, marking their first credited role. Following their debut in season 6, episode 7, "The Broken Man," both fans and critics praised their performance, highlighting their commanding portrayal of the character’s no-nonsense leadership. Their standout presence continued to draw acclaim in the season finale, with The Hollywood Reporter naming them "season 6's breakout star."
In February 2021, they were cast in the lead role of Ellie in HBO’s adaptation of the 2013 video game The Last of Us, starring alongside fellow Game of Thrones alumnus Pedro Pascal. In season two, episode four, Ellie and Dina (played by Isabela Merced) openly expressed their feelings for each other and shared an intimate scene. This portrayal of their relationship prompted a wave of review bombing from some viewers.
They identify as non-binary and have expressed that they/them pronouns feel "the most truthful" to them, though they are generally indifferent to which pronouns are used. Speaking about their sexuality, they described themselves as "not 100 percent straight" and added, "I'm a little bit wavy."
