It’s no secret that Apple Inc. has become a bit stagnant in recent years. Sure, the company sells hundreds of millions of iPhones annually, and its user base exceeds 2 billion. It even can still invent cool new things (the Vision Pro was a technological breakthrough, though not a commercial hit). But look closer, and the story isn’t quite as compelling.

Apple has flopped in artificial intelligence. While Google and Microsoft Corp. pushed the boundaries of generative AI, Apple watched from the sidelines. The iPhone, once the pinnacle of innovation, hasn’t meaningfully changed since 2020. And behind the scenes, Apple is bleeding talent — not just its key executives, but engineers who quietly keep its core products alive...
