President Trump and his allies are doing whatever they can to punish any individual or institution that might criticize the administration. Their campaign of intimidation has already succeeded at CBS News, where both CEO Wendy McMahon and 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens have resigned over the company’s decision to settle the $20 billion suit Trump slapped the network with late last year.
The Baffler has not yet been targeted. Nonetheless, as a small nonprofit organization on the political margins, we are preparing for the worst-case scenario—and for us, that means expanding our libel coverage.
Trump’s lawfare and threats have already had a chilling effect on institutions that once considered themselves to be bulwarks of free expression. The Baffler doesn’t plan on shutting up or giving in, and libel insurance would help us cover legal fees should a newly emboldened far right decide it doesn’t like the kinds of stories we publish.
