It's been a week for file browsing tools. To kick it off, the AList project stirred up some controversy after announcing it's been sold and is going commercial. The news surfaced after users discovered a PR attempting to add telemetry to the application, which as of the time of writing has been rejected. To add to the chaos, the GitHub issue with the discourse and comments from the dev has since been deleted. A community fork named OpenList has already been created for those looking to make the jump. The maintainers of the popular file browsing application FileBrowser also announced their official departure from the project last week. Several users have already volunteered to take over future development and maintenance, but TBD on the overall impact this will have on the platform – popular forks like FileBrowser Quantum have already been gaining traction given the original project's lack of development activity in recent months. In other notable activity, Bibliotecha, a Goodreads-like book-tracking platform, dropped its first release. The project addresses a significant gap in the world of services needed to replace those offered by big tech (thanks, pickles4evaaaa). Ars Technica also reminded us why so many users are drawn to self-hosting their own media collections. Happy selfh.st/ing!
