The world waits for Trump |

Welcome to The Logoff: The biggest story remains the Israel-Iran war, but not much has changed since yesterday, so I’ll do a quick recap and then let you get back to your day.
What’s the situation? Israel is bombing Iranian nuclear facilities and other targets. Iran is launching counterstrikes and has rejected Trump’s call for an “unconditional surrender.” Civilians on both sides are dying.
Where’s the US in all this? Israel’s government is asking President Donald Trump to help bomb some of Iran’s hardest-to-hit nuclear facilities. Iran is warning Trump that joining the attack would sunder any hopes of a longer-term peace deal. Trump told reporters today: “Nobody knows what I’m going to do.” What’s the big picture? We’re where we were 24 hours ago: hoping for a deal to prevent more civilian death, fearing an escalation, and hoping — albeit with some skepticism — that Trump can deliver on his promise of brokering peace deals.

And with that, it's time to log off... |

The Logoff will be off tomorrow and Friday, but we’ll see you back here on Monday.
In the meantime, given the dire state of affairs, I get the temptation to spend a lot of time glued to a screen. But doomscrolling doesn’t make the world better and it doesn’t make you happier. Instead, I’d recommend this fascinating BBC essay and photo gallery about great white sharks, or, perhaps, this delightful story about a success in Galápagos tortoise conservation — featuring a 135-year-old father. Take good care this weekend, and, as always, thanks so much for reading.
