Her mother was the first in the family to go to college at Howard University and her father, who dreamed of flying planes when he was a child, became a Tuskegee airman. In a speech at Abilene Christian University, she says she grew up with the mantra, “Discipline, determination and ‘de Lord.”

Her broadcasting career began at local stations in Mississippi and Tennessee before she joined ESPN in 1990. Her catchphrase was, “Go on with your bad self!” In 1995, she started working for ABC News and became a reporter for Good Morning America.
Her charisma, knowledge of sports, and ability to connect with viewers quickly made her a fan favorite. In 2005, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to co-anchor ABC’s Good Morning America.
Throughout her tenure at GMA, she has covered numerous high-profile events, conducted exclusive interviews, and won multiple awards, including several Emmys. However, her most significant impact may be her role as an advocate for the LGBTQ community.
