The Supreme Court v. poor people's health |

Welcome to The Logoff: It’s a relatively slow news day from the Trump administration, but there’s other political news that’s too big to ignore: The Supreme Court issued a ruling that will make it much easier for states to defund Planned Parenthood, a decision that promises to sharply curtail poor people’s access to health care.
Where can I learn about that ruling? I found this New York Times piece really helpful, as well as this one from NPR. Both explain how the ruling will prevent recipients of Medicaid — a government insurance program for low-income people — in Republican-led states from going to Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings, contraception, and other non-abortion health services. (Federal law already bans Medicaid funds from being used for most abortions, albeit with some exceptions, but Planned Parenthood is a major provider of many types of care.)
I also got a lot out of my colleague Ian Millhiser’s piece explaining the shaky legal foundations of the decision, as well as the obvious political motivation behind it. It’s a confusing issue, but I think it’s one that’s really worth taking the time to understand. |

I started this newsletter because I think it’s possible to be an informed, engaged citizen without sacrificing your mental well-being. A big part of that, however, is a healthy relationship with technology. So I want to recommend User Friendly, a weekly newsletter from my colleague Adam Clark Estes that, as he says, helps you “make sure your tech is working for you, instead of overwhelming you.” You can sign up here. And if you want to sample it first, check out his great piece about how to prevent fitness trackers from making you miserable. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you back here tomorrow.
