The Unusual Heroes Bundle - Curated by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
The best heroes are unexpected. In life and art, it's often the unassuming quiet person in the corner—not the square-jawed alpha male—who usually comes to the rescue.
If you look, you'll find a lot of unexpected heroes in the world around you. But fiction takes unexpected from that unassuming mousey person in the corner to an actual mouse. Who goes on adventures of his own. Or an actual square-jawed hero who got demoted and spends his life saving kittens. Or a menopausal demon hunter with one more fight left in her.
The werewolf on a train? He's not a predator. He's the hero. Or a woman with power over stone who somehow needs to control the weather. How does she step up?
This bundle skews toward SF and fantasy—some set in made-up universes, like my own Retrieval Artist (set on the Moon) to Anthea Sharp's beloved Feyland, while others toil in our world, like Dean Wesley Smith's popular hero Poker Boy and Annie Reed's wise guys trying to start over in Northern Idaho, far away (they think) from the violence of their youth.
Adventures. Good versus evil. And heroes. Whenever there are heroes—be they mice or men—there are victories. Hard-earned, yes. World-changing. Probably.
But definitely worth reading.
The great thing about about heroes? They give us all hope that everything will turn out all right in the end.
And hope allows us to move through our own dark world.
Of course, we couldn't march through this world without the real heroes. Folks like World Central Kitchen, who go to disaster zones everywhere. From tornado-ravaged communities in the United States to war-ravaged cities in the Middle East, World Central Kitchen is there, providing meals on the front lines.
WCK has served 450 million meals and counting.
That's heroic.
But for them to do their heroic work, they need financing. So as you pick up your bundle of unusual heroes, throw in some money for the actual heroes on the way out. Bring a little hope to the world, as you pick up some for yourself.
Thanks so much! – Kristine Kathryn Rusch
